Diana Nyad, a 61-year-old woman is attempting a 60 hour, 103 mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida. She is trying to perform the longest swim without using a shark cage. Admirable if you ask me considering we all just finished watching Shark Week. Remember the Air Jaws segment?
“I’m standing here in the prime of my life,” ... “I think this is the prime, when one reaches this age. You still have a body that’s strong, but now you have a better mind; a mind at peace with the joy of the world, a mind that’s full of courage, and not afraid."
Once a competitive long distance swimmer in her thirties, Diana is back at it in order to fulfill her lifelong dream and will be facing almost 3 days of no sleep, only stopping every 90 minutes to refuel in the water using a plastic tube. Although not using a shark cage, she will be accompanied by a support team of kayaks equipped with electrical shark shields and a team of divers who can jump in to fend of any looming sea creatures. FYI, the straits that mark her route are considered to be "shark-infested".
We are cheering for you Diana. Rumrunners on Duval Street await your arrival.
